Demographic and social change, migration and cultural diversity, economic and technological transformation processes as well as the consequences of global climate change are just a few of the challenges that clearly show us the need for sustainable and integrated urban development. This is also underlined by the global sustainability goal SDG 11 "Sustainable Cities and Communities" of the United Nations. In order to cope with this, sustainable urban development must overcome the boundaries of the traditional sectoral single disciplines and develop an integrated and interdisciplinary perspective through critical reflection and a systematic scientific- approach.
In our Certificate of Advanced Studies „Sustainable Urban Development“, you will acquire comprehensive, interdisciplinary knowledge in the field of sustainable urban development. You will deal with concepts and strategies for mixed-use, dense, resource-efficient and climate-friendly cities and districts. You will also learn to develop strategies for inclusive public spaces and climate-adapted green and open spaces. You will get to know the actors involved, develop planning approaches for socially and culturally integrated urban development and deal with current best practice examples in Europe and worldwide.
Transferring the acquired knowledge into your own practice, you will be able to critically accompany current urban development processes, reflect on them and design future-oriented, sustainable planning approaches for urban areas in theory and practice. Your interdisciplinary understanding and the ability to develop integrated solutions to complex urban problems qualifies you for management and leadership tasks in an increasingly interdisciplinary context.
