The Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS): Sustainable Cities, Urban Development and Infrastructure combines the two certificate courses CAS: Urban Development and Sustainable Cities and CAS: Urban infrastructure (see also the separate course descriptions of the two certificates on this website).
Given the diverse social, cultural, technological, economic, and environmental challenges facing cities and urban areas worldwide, sustainable and future-oriented urban development can only fulfill its responsibility through the collaboration of all disciplines involved in the planning and design of urban spaces. This is also emphasized by the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For too long, thinking and action have been conducted within the separate silos of different professions and departments: here the architects, there the traffic engineers, and then the infrastructure planners, the landscape architects, and others – with neatly separated responsibilities, competencies, and concepts. To tackle the pressing urban problems, however, the networking of knowledge and shared strategic approaches are necessary, bringing together the diversity of the disciplines involved in a holistic and integrated planning process.
The Diploma of Advanced Studies "Sustainable Cities, Urban Development and Infrastructure" provides you with comprehensive knowledge and interdisciplinary skills in sustainable urban and open space development, as well as in key areas of urban infrastructure, across six study modules. You will explore strategies and concepts for sustainable cities, climate-adapted open spaces, and inclusive neighborhoods. You will become familiar with the key stakeholders involved in the planning process, as well as relevant best practice examples from Europe and worldwide. You will examine solutions for environmentally friendly urban mobility, particularly in its non-motorized form and in close connection with spatial planning, and gain an understanding of the fundamentals of urban water supply, sustainable waste management, and the future-proof energy supply of our cities.
By transferring the acquired, interdisciplinary knowledge into your own practice, you can analyze and reflect on current challenges in urban and infrastructure development and develop future-oriented solutions. These cross-cutting skills qualify you for management and leadership roles in an increasingly interdisciplinary professional field.

Zugangsvoraussetzung:
Sofern Sie eine Anrechnung auf den M.Sc. Urban Agglomerations anstreben, müssen dessen Zulassungsvoraussetzungen erfüllt sein. Außerdem ist die erfolgreiche Teilnahme an den Prüfungen nötig. Selbstverständlich können Sie an unseren Weiterbildungen auch ohne Prüfungen und ohne den Erwerb von ECTS-Punkten teilnehmen.

Sustainable Cities, Urban Development and Infrastructure – from the content:
- Module Urban Development and Sustainable Cities – Requirements, principles and worldwide best practices for sustainable and inclusive urban development
- Module Social and Cultural Challenges of Cities – Actors and planning approaches for socially and culturally integrative urban development
- Module Green and Public Spaces – theoretical and practical concepts for a sustainable, climate-adapted and inclusive development of open spaces and public areas in the city
- Module Mobility in Cities – Requirements, solutions and practical examples for sustainable, especially non-motorized, mobility in cities
- Module Urban Infrastructure: Water and Sewage – Fundamentals of water supply and wastewater and rainwater management as part of sustainable urban development
- Module Urban Infrastructure: Waste and Energy – Fundamentals of energy supply and waste management in urban areas
At the end of the certificate course, you will have acquired comprehensive, cross-cutting knowledge in sustainable urban development and urban infrastructure and will be able to operate in an increasingly interdisciplinary field and to assume leadership and management positions.
Certificate (CAS) and Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS)
Certificates of Advanced Studies (CAS) and Diplomas of Advanced Studies (DAS) are continuing education certificates offered exclusively by universities. They build upon one another, similar to the Bachelor's and Master's system for undergraduate degree programs at universities. The unique aspect is that upon successful completion of the final examination, you receive credit points (ECTS) that can be applied – for example, towards our M.Sc. in Urban Agglomerations. You receive 5 ECTS credits per module, 15 ECTS credits for a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS), and 30 ECTS credits for the Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS). Of course, you can also participate in our continuing education programs and individual modules without taking exams and without earning ECTS credits.
